Attributed to George William Horlor (1823-1895)
The ghillie's companion
oil on canvas
12 ¼ x 16 â…› in. (31 x 41 cm.)
with frame 18 ½ x 22 ½ in. (47 x 57.2 cm.)

George Horlor was unusual among Scottish artists for frequently depicting collies lying down in his sporting and canine paintings. This work bears all the hallmarks of his hand: the soft brushstrokes, the distinct light brown of the collie, and a tartan blanket. The collie gazes directly at the viewer, and one has to speculate whether the dog belonged to the artist himself - the absence of a signature certainly supports the idea that it was painted for his own enjoyment and keepsake.
